Overt Security Features

1 Thermochromatic Ink - Reacts to changes in temperature. At 78 degrees it begins to fade and disappears at 85 degrees. It reappears as it cools to 78 degrees. It CANNOT be color copied because the copier heat makes it disappear!

2 Fourdrinier (True) Watermark in Boise Cascade Pentagon paper that is visible from either side when held to the light. The watermark is dual-tone. When combined with thermochromatic ink and an explicit warning band describing the ink and true watermark, this paper is an excellent deterrent against color copying because neither feature can be color copied.

3 Visible Blue Fibers - Help authenticate an original check.

4 Warning Banners - Call attention to the safety features in the check. They advise recipients and tellers to inspect the document before acceptance, and may also deter thieves from experimenting.

5 Microprinting - Appears to be a broken line around the border. The font size makes it very difficult to copy without blurring. New high-dpi scanners can replicate microprinting.

6 Laid Lines - Deter cut-and-paste alterations.

7 Chemical-wash Detection Boxes - Serves as a deterrent by leaving evidence of chemical washing (see 8).

Covert Security Features

8 Chemical Reactive Paper - This check stains when touched by ink eradicator-class chemicals (see 7). Pentagon is reactive to 85 different chemicals.

9 Copy Void Pantograph - Deters copying and scanning. This feature can be broken by high-end color copiers/scanners.

10 Fluorescent Fibers - Become visible under ultraviolet light to further authenticate an original document.

Laser Printing Security

11 TonerGrip^TM - A chemical coating on laser checks that bonds the toner onto the paper when printed with a hot laser printer. Without it, toner will peel off with ordinary Scotch tape.

12 Sequenced Inventory Control Numbers - When laser checks are not pre-numbered on the face, a control number is printed on the back of each check. This number is imperative for audit purposes and discourages internal theft of check stock when an inventory log is maintained.
